Hi

We are going to Nantucket next week and I wonder what kind of kite flying environment that is?  I have heard the beaches are crowded.

Can anyone who has been there give me a few tips?  Where to fly?  I suppose I will have to bring SLKs that will fit my suitcase....

And I've heard of the Nantucket Kiteman but he is no longer around (I assume), but am wondering if there are any kite stores I should visit....?  Kiss

Thx J.

The original nantucket kiteman passed away, but his family has started to recreate some of his kites....I do not know if there is a physical shop...there was one in Falmouth (Doctor Gravity) which was awesome but i expect any iteration of that shop now is a toy/kotchki shop.

Flying in Massachusetts: you are not allowed to fly on protected natural resource areas.  I am not certain about Nantucket specifically, but most of the beaches on Cape Cod you are NOT allowed to fly on due to their status.

Oh, thank you, thief.  I'm glad I asked about kite flying there.  I didn't see any kites in any beach photos online when I looked for kite info. I bet you are right that it's mostly protected land.  J.

I've flown kites at many locations on the Cape and on Nantucket. There are locations where it's prohibited but AFAIK that's the exception, not the rule. On Nantucket in particular I've flown plenty on the South shore at Surfside beach, just west of the "No Kites" spot marked on this map Smiley

By far the biggest issue for me has been finding a time when it's sufficiently deserted to be able to fly safely.

I have a soft spot for Doctor Gravity's Kite Shop (still operating in Harwich Port), it's where I bought my first dualie. Great for picking up inexpensive SLKs but don't go there expecting to round out a serious sport kite collection.

Doc Gravity's still is open? wow....I remember in the early 2000s walking down the street and seeing their selection still had brand new early 90s sport kites hanging in there...nice pieces, but more $ than most visitors would expect to spend.....

Thank you Sluggo for the map and info.  So I will pack a few kites in my bag.

I googled for Dr Gravity and indeed he has a facebook page and a website and they don't say anything about being closed that I noticed.  I would post the links but I don't think that's permissible.  Looks like he had/has a nice selection.

Thanks, guys.  J.

I just wanted to follow up that we spent a week on Nantucket and I did not see one single kite other than my own in the sky.  We flew ours from our flat lawn, since we were a few blocks from the beaches.

True, we were not on the beaches a lot (so I may have missed a lonely kite flyer here and there), but still, the wind was wonderful--a nice steady 10-12 mph almost every day, it was sunshine and blue skies, and no one was flying kites that I could find.

Such a pity....made me sad. Sad

Glad you found some nice weather and wind! Yeah, I also seldom see anyone else flying when I'm down there...

Just noting, if you are ever near the New England coastline again, Brenton Point in Newport, RI is a fantastic location for kiting.

Thank you for the Newport idea.
We haven't been to Newport for many years but hopefully will be back before too long.
We are going to Martha's Vineyard in October to visit our daughter though and I may take a couple of kites.
