One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

Recently got this kite. Made by High Flyers. I like the looks of it, but don't know a thing about it. Looks a lot like the Benson Phantom I used to have.

Tim Benson, due to increasing orders, worked with Highflyers in early 1990 to help out with production of the Phantom. They were produced by Highflyers with minor variations till 1992.

Thanks for the info. I found a pretty good article about it, but all the pics were missing. The extra panels on this one threw me off. Looks like they changed it at some point during the production run.

From Bill Lancashire's History of the Phantom:

http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=14163.0

The 1990 and 1991 Highflyers sales brochures also listed some minor variants of the Phantoms. There was a 'Sport Phantom' with simpler 6-panel sail (framed with 5.9mm Beman Carbon Light 15 in the UK and AFC 2200 (0.22 inches) in the USA)

Highflyers ceased production of the original 10-panel Phantom in early 1991. For the 1992 season they added two more panels to the sail and called the kite 'Shadow Phantom 2'. An example is shown in one of the photographs in the album.

After 1992 Highflyers used a heavier (non-Carrington brand) ripstop fabric, Dacron LE tape and framed with tougher 6mm spars made by Pultrex for their kites. I have no examples of these kites yet and so far have not researched them. They stayed in production during the 1990s until Highflyers ceased kite production sometime in the early 2,000s.

I found this in the Bill Lancashire article: "During this time (at Bristol 1990) The Decorators obtained a set of Highflyers Phantoms made in the same team colours as the earlier Benson Kites ones. An extra panel on each side was added by splitting the outer panels. However, these kites definitely had the Phantom size sail and should not be confused with the 'Phantom Shadow' described below."

I was just curious what I had. All the pics are gone from the article. I'm thinking this is just a standard Phantom with the extra outer panels.

The nomenclature is a bit confusing. The descriptions speak of a Phantom Shadow and a 12 panel Phantom as different kites.
