One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

Is there a scanner/printer/fax/ that is "backwards" compatible?  I would like to be able to scan a photo or document directly to a thumb drive without using a computer.

I believe the HP C309a will.

Some Brother and OKI MFPs will too.

However find it in a store and demo it on any candidate machines.  I expect a lot of users and fewer sales people are aware of this feature.

This is a fairly common feature in workgroup MFPs.

Usually people are looking for PictBridge which allows you to print without the PC.

I stopped at BestBuy last night and asked the sales people. No one seems to know if this is possible.

Cheesy Cheesy  Well.... I did warn you.  Welcome to being weird.  It only hurts for a little bit.   Let me know if you have a brand preference and/or other wishlist items for the machine and I will see if I can dig up a list for you.  I was in a store when the sales person was trying to convince a customer that the proper way to scan a slide was to lay the bare slide on a vanilla flatbed scanner.  I was glad I didn't have a mouthful of liquid.  For some reason it is the rare salesperson that will say "I don't know" or "let me find that out for you" (doubly unforgivable as most electronic stores have a broadband connection.

There is one HP that says it 'will put pictures on a CD" but I think it refers to LightScribe

Lightscribe is a technology that allows an optical drive to "burn" an graphical image to the non-data side of an optical disk.  Cute gimmick but it takes a loooooong time and on a lot of disks the image fades out with exposure to light.  I guess you are alright if you work in the dark, but....

I think lots will scan straight to a memory card, like an SD card. My not-new Brother all-in-one will, but not to a USB key without a computer, I think. Of course, an SD card plus a card reader =~ a USB key, no??
