Welcome to the GWTW Forum.
Guests (non-registered users) can view the forum but are unable to post.  If you don't have anything to say then why would you bother to register?
One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

So maybe i'm just inattentive but it seems in the last week or two the "Why register?" bottom banner appeared.

I know on the old forum it was register to read, and this actually kept me from registering for a while, but i thought that carried over to the new forum. my impression was it was register to read.

in any case, the reason i mention it is that if guests have the ability to read the forums and click on this and that, poking away, it's likely a machine will harvest email addresses here as many of you have them readily accessible in your profiles and along with your posts.

having the registration process include a captcha means harvesters can't collect information without human intervention.

anyway, just a heads up for those of you with exposed email addresses in case open viewing is a recent change.

steve has now provided us a robust pm system in which we can exchange email addresses should external communication be desired.

just a thought. if this is old news please disregard, and mods feel free to delete/modify.

Unregistered users have been able to read these forums since the changover.

They cannot post, read the Swap Meets, or member profiles.

In fact, they cannot even see the Swap Meets.

They can't see a lot of stuff actually..

well that's cool. i just find spam more insidious than mold, and harder to eradicate. in either case a healthy dose of prevention is the greatest defense.

thanks for the info.

I don't know where you're surfing on the internet to attract such bad spam.  Angry
I've had the same email address for well over 10 years, and I get maybe up to 5 pieces of spam per day. And that's easily dealt with by the junk mail filter in Outlook. Are you using Outlook ? Do you use a public email system (hotmail, gmail, yahoo, aol) ?  Using public mail systems would be a magnet for junk mail, but even so, setting junk mail rules in your email client should take care of 95%+ of the problem.

I can see why the Why Register? blurb is visible to non-members, but why have it showing for logged-in members?

Excellent point noob ... the "why register?" blurb should now be "hidden" when you are logged into the forum.
