One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

Hey Gang,
Need some input please. Mr. Bone (president of the Conference and Visitor's Center), wants to have an event (if you can call it that) at KP that the city can incorporate into a press release to the public to advertise the event. The idea is to get more people (general public) to attend. We discussed an "ALL KITES UP" thing sometime in the afternoon, say 3:00ish, where the goal is to have as many kites as possible flying at one time. So the idea is that EVERYONE at the event puts a kite in the sky and we try to reach some goal (200, 300, 500, etc.). My first requirement was that it didn't impact the main KITE PARTY field for more than 15 minutes or so, and at no time will the public be allowed on the main field. It would also be made clear via announcements that proper etiquite (sp?) needs to be followed. SO, input please, and a catchy name for this happening would be nice. So far, ALL KITES UP is the best we've come up with. CHIME IN PLEASE.....

Keep in mind we will have at least one extra field on the south side and will be expanding in front of the condos.....

Maybe you could combine the AKU with the Lummas SLK fly....

And have the city businesses chip in a portion of the SLKs so the price per kite is low enough for many more to enjoy. And Ben might get a little more money for treatment. Just a thought. (See, I didn't highjack this thread).  Smiley

Perhaps folks could bring kites from previous "Ben" flys or other SLKs and fly them along with new "Ben" kites.

How about "Paint the Sky", or "Color the Sky", or "Filling the Sky with Color".
After all, this is about the most colorful hobby/pass time this side of  NASCAR or a big  balloon festival.

While I was reading the original post I also thought of incorporating Ben's event, and John thought the same.

"Fill the sky, feel the Spirit"

I think the only to way to get that number of kites up would be to get the spectators involved

If the cost of the kites were subsidized then maybe some local youth groups can get involved, both with kids to fly and counselors to assist on the field,

Yeah, I liked the idea of incorporating Ben's event also, and talked to Mr. Bone about it, I was actually just concerned that KP people wouldn't be flying, but I just realized, you people can fly a single liner too, can't you?

You guys are too kind with your flies for Ben.  They always bring a tear to my eye, just seeing the outpouring of support for the little guy.  It's truely amazing.

As for Mr Bone's proposal, "All Kites Up" would work.  Other alternatives would be "Take To The Sky" or "The Sky's The Limit" or "Reach For The Sky".  Just throwing them out there.

Whatever happens though, anything we can do to help raise the profile of the event sounds good to me.

Thanks,

Mark
