One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

I like the new google phone but am still more interested in a netbook.
If i had a nexus1, once i buy an app for it what happens if i break it or get a new phone?
Is the app tied to the handset or can i download it again or to my pc? Or what?
If the apps arent portable then im gonna stick with the netbook.

Another issue I've heard is that the Android-based phones only have 512MB of memory from which to store everything that they run (they cannot run programs from external storage like SD cards).  So, once you buy some of those cool games (70-80MB in size) you quickly run out of space.

Anyone know if this is true - I've heard it a few times.  Seems like a bad design (sort of like the way the Wii does it).

From here

"7.02pm: Why only 512MB for app storage?
Andy Rubin: It helps protect applications against piracy. In the future we'll increase the storage space."

(no, I don't get it either ....)

Sounds like they don't want people just copying apps onto storage cards and running them without paying for them (until they "fix" this).

Anyhow, 512MB is just dumb considering that my 2 year old iTouch allows 32GB.  I mean the ability to have extra storage but not use it for apps is not very appealing.

I got a Creative Zen Nano MP3 player a few years ago. It's 512 meg and can store about 20 albums. I have a year old Creative Zen that's 8 gig and can store about 200 albums. Look how much progress there is in a few years.

They need to get with with program!

you can store all the media you want on an Android based phone... you're just limited to from 128MB to 512MB of internal memory for applications.  And this should be lifted soon as a patch to Andriod 2.1.

I haven't had the limit problem... I've been running Android 1.6 on my HTC Touch through a Linux loader... I don't have the app limit- everything is running from my 8GB microSD card- but it's slow, since the system is running from that card as well.  I'm holding off on an Android phone until a new batch of hardware is released- faster processor (like the 1GHz processor in the Nexus or better), and more built-in memory (faster than an SD card).  I have a friend here at work with the Droid...  pretty neat phone, actually.  It's enough to make my other iPhone carrying friend consider switching to a Droid.

They'll probably come up with some way of signing an app to some ID on the phone (OS, hardware, who knows?  Probably some hardware ID) so once an app is purchased and downloaded, it will only download to that phone.

Wait 6 months on this stuff unless you like to hassle with technology. Maybe even a year before things really get smoothed out. All the iPhone competition is chaos right now. It'll settle down and we'll have some good options. First generation of anything is usually a hassle.
