Where Are The MAPA's

One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

In general, it seems kite frames using the PT series go:

2PT: SUL
3PT: UL
5PT: standard

But when you get to the leading edge connectors, the APA set seems to have a gap:

TAPA: SUL
TAPA or APA: UL
APA: standard

I have ULs which use TAPAs and ULs which use APAs.

It's like Goldilocks for the ULs:
This connector is too big. This connector is too small.

How about the manufacturers come out with a Middle APA (MAPA) for the ULs? Then I would have a fitting which is just right.

I really haven't seen any problem using TAPAs on ULs. IMO TAPAs supply all the stiffness needed.
A MAPA would just add unescisary weight.
They could be useful if trying to add a tiny bit of weight on one of the LE points though. I know that I really liked the effect of using normal APAs for the LLE on one UL prototype.

They might be useful on the US conectors on a std, ala DS but slightly larger.

I think it would basically just be another variable to play with trying to balance a kite.

I would think that the weight difference would be so slight that no human being could possibly tell the difference.  Seriously.

4 APAs weigh about 20 grams
4 TAPAs weigh about 6 grams

My 3pt kites usually have tapa upper and apa lower. APAs add stiffness, which is generally good for a UL, but I like 'em for an entirely practical reason. Durability. If you leave your spreaders in, TAPAs dont long survive all the folding.

That's where a medium APA would come in handy. LLE connectors on UL's & SUL's.

My point was, APAs are perfect for 3PT lowers. I wouldnt want anything wimpier

I always go with the smaller fitting and drill it out to fit the spar.
