I hope money is no object, cids! Tilley makes high-quality hats (etc.) and they guarantee them for life, but they won't impress you with their bargain prices. Some general-merchandise stores -- like Canadian Tire or Zellers or WalMart -- would probably have "cheap imitation Tilley" hats for maybe 75% off the price. Or other versions of shade hats, like baseball caps with extra flaps or a burnoose, etc.

For kite flying, I still often wear a (cheaper) Tilley style hat, but for sailing I've switched to the cap-plus-flaps style. I find they tend to stay put better in strong winds. (Only disadvantage is that I miss the foam padding in the Tilley style hats whenever I get clocked on the bean by the boom! I'm planning to add some foam padding of my own!)

I had an old Tilley that had a rip in it.  They say they are guaranteed for life so I followed the return policy and sent the hat along with  $7 and change for Priority Mail (actual cost, no handling) and in 7 days from the time I mailed my request I received a brand new hat ... and they returned my old one.

Yes they cost more but IMO they are worth every penny.

This is the Tilley hat that I want but the price is approv. CAN$90 which is too expensive. Is there other hats available with similar feature ? I like the neck protector feature.

Thanks....

And as Thief said, MEC (Mtn Equipment Coop) is another good source of good-quality stuff, as is the place across the street from it, Europe Bound. Not as cheap as the offshore-sourced mass marketers I listed, in either sense!

Please don't take my cheap comments personally, you fans of boutique kites and clothing! I actually own one or two REAL Tilley items, though no hats now.

For several years a while back, I was working my way up to buying a pair of Tilley pants, and the local Tilley store and I did a kind of a dance. I'd go into the store, admire the pants, and choke on the price. Let's call it $50 when this all started.

Then over the next few months, I gradually talked myself into it: "Heck, you've got the $50, and you'd wear those pants almost every day, almost everywhere. And they'd wear like iron. And they're guaranteed, for @#$% sake. . ." Then I'd go back into the store, ready to shell out the $50, and I'd find the pants, and they were $72.50! So I'd go home and slowly re-start my part of the dance. I think I did that whole circuit three times before I decided I was chasing a receding target!

I bought a Tilly specifically for kiting.  It was $42 (used) but in excellent shape.

I absolutely love it and would not hestitate to buy another.
