Sound problem

my grandson has a:

I bought him a webcam so we can keep in touch on skype but it seems that he hasn't got much sound. Turns out his girlfriends sister used to own the pc and her boyfriend spent too much time on it with his music so she decided to delete the sound. Tracy says it doesn't have a sound cared in it..  can this be right?  Are there drivers he can download for free somewhere?

It should have a (on-board) sound card, the best way to tell is look for a place to plug in a headphone and microphone (normally color coded green and pink)

First thing to check on sound problems is: are the speakers plugged into the right jack? Second: are the speakers plugged in to the power? Third: can you test the speakers by plugging them into a known good source? A walkman with standard mini jack will do, a tape recorder, another computer.

If somebody disabled the sound they hopefully just muted it in the volume controls, and maybe hid the volume icon,  if it is not accessible in the tray by the clock goto the control panel > sound and audio devices area and make sure the volume sliders are up and none of the mute boxes are checked except for the Microphone input which is muted by default. Since all versions of Windows are a bit different it's hard to say exactly which buttons to push to get to the volume controls but click around you'll find them.

Past that you get into things like, is the proper device selected and going into the Device Manager and checking that the sound card is properly installed & working. Hopefully the above steps cure the problem, if not somebody can talk you through these next steps once you post which version of Windows it has.
