I have stated this before and still believe it to be true:

All black kites only look good when they are backlit, and then they look really good.

Backlit (Really good):

Front lit same kite(Not so good):

Front lit (Not so good):

Tim Benson has a backlit shot on his webite of an all-black Deep Space. It looks great.

Monochrome (black/grey/white) kites are the shyte  Cool. IMHO, they look extremely good in front of clear blue skies and some really sharp flying. Not a good choice of colour for a SUL though if you sometimes fly at night  Undecided

Although.... Red light has a shorter wavelength than blue light and thus causes less optical resistance, allowing it to fly faster.  This is why kites like the Phantom Elite have a "fade" pattern, putting the lighter, more resistive colours in the center and the darker colours on the outside, thus reducing optical drag at the wingtips.

Black kites look rubbish in all but the right lighting conditions. They are a bugger to tell which way around they are when tricking too. Some little dab of colour makes all the difference. YMMV

No Colour kites are usually boring. But one of my prototypes of the Black Pearl is also very dark.
And like it always!

I thought all black was a great look, until I actually flew it. It's really easy to lose the kite in the backround, unfortunately. If you fly anywhere that there's trees, or a hill, the kite almost disappears when it goes past. Then there's also the trouble with loosing the orientation of the kite once in a while, you're doing a trick, and right in the middle, can't tell which way the kite's facing...

That's been my experience with the black kite, I'd never buy one again.

black kites get more heat from the sun and therefore cause more lift Cheesy Not
I have some darker kites but nothing of a solid color. After flying some all black kites i agree that it can be tough to see orientation while tricking.
Ulitmately you have to look at it for, hopefully, for extended periods of time; buy what you like.

I did get a chance to fly an Ocius and liked it but would like to see some more color at the wingtips, but thats just me

Appart from the things mentioned above, there's always the matter of taste.
If you realy want a Black, or "dark" kite try a few shades of grey.
Get the effect off a blak kite, and add a little visual orientation.

It's a personal thing, but the more I fly black, the more I like it (and I liked it to start with).  It is a very strong, bold "color" - looks great against white, grey, blue skys, not so good against anything dark like evening treelines, etc.

And here in Seattle...  Thats all we get. Wink Undecided   But I like Black too. So maybe I'll get a black one for the sky color contrast... Cheesy

In rare situations its REQUIRED ... like on Fearless SSUL Tattoo ... only in BLACK ... required by Lam due to its construction ... its KOOL looking ... my favorite is a slightly dirty yellow color which is the color of my new Transformer TL.
