Does anybody have experience of the airfoils from Colours In Motion? I'm a *total* beginner to kiting and was kind of set on getting a Prism Quantum for learning tricks and a Snapshot 1.4 for some highspeed fun Wink, but how would you compare the Snapshot to, let's say, the CIM Smash 1.5?

Also, I am (will be) an inland flyer, with most often low and/or erratic winds. Would you say the 4D would be a better choice than the Quantum?

No, the 4D is a kite to add after you've gotten your bag started, it's limited in wind range and abilities. The Quantum is a great first kite but you've obviously researched and seen it is not a low wind kite. But IMO you would not be served well starting with an Ultra Light, you really should start with a Standard.

No experience with the Colors in Motion but you never really go wrong with a Prism, good quality and support.

Thanks!

The kite that got me hooked was an Adrenaline, which I repeatedly tried to turn into a cultivator, but it stubbornly refused to break. So I can testify to the sturdy design of Prism kites.

And yes, I'm trying my best to do fairly thorough research before I splurge (which is how I found this forum). Knowing myself, I will do some serious splurging after my research is finished; I just want to make sure I splurge on the right stuff.

So, my gut feeling is that if I ask "Is there any light-wind kite suitable for beginners?", the answer would be "No, they are all simply too fragile. Go with a sturdier kite until you're past the lawn dart stage." Am I correct?

Unless anybody else would like to chime in, it seems I'm leaning towards the Quantum and the Snapshot, then. (Or if anybody would like to chime in just to tell me I've made the right choice and ease my decision angst, feel free.)

Well if your past the lawn dart stage with your Adrenaline you might consider going up another step. Many will say go for a "Botique" kite but if $250 - $300 + is out of the equation there are kites in the $150 range that would be a better choice. The Prism Hypnotist gets recommendations (I don't like it but that's me), the Prism E3 is an excellent value. The Premier Widow is a half price Widowmaker although a bit heavier, the Silver Fox line has a good following, The Acrobatix line has an UL at $125 that might suit your needs. I haven't flown all the newer offerings in this range so I'm sure others can add to this. But I would invest the extra $40-$60 and move up a step, you'll get a better kite with a wider wind range.

One of the first kite that i learned to fly on was an Adrenaline, then i got an E2 , which i learned a lot of tricks with ( check out the Prisim tutorial DVD ) and will fly down to 4mph. I have lawndarted the E2 many times and must say i was fortunate not to break anything.
I will suggest the E3, alternatively Silver fox, Freestylist are also good choices

The Quantum needs some pretty good wind to fly well - probably about the same as your current kite.  If you are past the kite abuse flying stage, then I'd go for a different kite.

Prism-wise, you could get a Zephyr (or QPro).

Check out the BMK link on the right if you are looking for a great kite.  I like the BMK Exile and its an all around sweet kite - very smooth, flys well in low wind, and likes to do both the newer tricks as well as the older ones.    It has the advantage of being a standard (ie tough) but also flying better than many ULs in the same wind.  It's just a great kite for bad inland winds.

These kites sometimes come up here on the swap.

Colors in Motion is Constance and Wolfgang Grimsel.   They are the importers of Premier Kites into the EU.
looking at their catalog it looks like their foils are just the Premier Speedfoils.   The speedfoils do a very good job....they fly pretty well and pack down small!!!!!

I have just now ordered a Hypnotist and a Snapshot 1.4. Can't wait...

All kitefliers are good.

But to paraphrase a quote from George Orwell's "Animal Farm"

Four lines good, two lines better.
