Hi all,

I am just looking at sport/stunt kites and the thing I notice that seems a bit odd to me is that for any given kite, its UL partner is usually only about 2 to maybe 2.5 ounces lighter.  This knocks the wind speed required down from say 3 to 1 kinda range.

I gotta say, is 2ish ounces really all there is making something UL?  Now in the case of a Prism 4D at 2.5 ounces TOTAL I can see how that is indeed UL but taking a typical 7 or 8 foot kite thats starts at 10 ounces and only goes down to 8 ounces....uh, will that really make it flyable in very very low wind?

Regards,

Scott

That's one of the major differences, and yes, it is huge. You can really feel the differene of even removing just a few grams. It's about sail loading - I don't know exactly what the formula is, but the required air speed to make a wing create enough lift changes a lot with little weight changes.

There are also generally other changes in a UL - almost always different bridle, often different standoff placement, and occasionally a slightly more efficient sail shape.

Yep, big diifference. I can get another mile per hour or more low end by pulling the tail weight and the upper spreader, that's probably less then an ounce reduction and where you were struggling to stay in the air you are now flying. Removing the upper spreader can change the nose allowing a bit more billow at the upper leading edge which may translate into an increase in drive and lift that would help with low wind performance so it might not be all weight in my case.

A 1/2 ounce (about 15 grams) is noticeable on a full size kite. 2 ounces is a huge change

Wow, ok then, learn something new everyday.  Wish I could shave 2 ounces off my Micron!
