One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

Has anyone had to pay any import duty or tax on a new kite imported into Australia from Europe?  What about fees added by the carrier such as 'customs processing fees'?

I've bought camera gear at similar price levels and there's never been any charges by customs so would assume kites would be the same as long as it was under AU$1000.  OTOH one carrier has tried to charge me for 'customs processing'.

Cheers,

Don

I just imported one from the U.S and there was no tax put on top, so you should be all good.

I've imported around 20 kites over the past few years.  Never been asked to pay duty/tax.

That's because the Australian Government has a duty free threshold (currently being opposed by retailers like Harvey Norman).  The government calculated that the cost to pursue the duty on goods under the threshold is greater than the amount they collect, so why bother.

I can't remember the exact threshold, but it is around the $800 mark, which would return a tax amount of $80.

Thanks Kevin. Heard some news about this on the radio, they said the threshold is $1000 and the retailing community is trying to get it eliminated.  Hopefully they won't succeed!

Cheers,
