One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

Unless you were flying on very high wind for the kite, it should not break. Did you have it set all the way in?

I used to fly my sf 2.5 ul up to ten or more with no issues (never broke a ls on it) so I think just bad luck this time out.

The kite will show lots of signs of not being happy before it breaks.  What sort of wind were you flying in?

Shannon,
when I flew my SF (a few years back) for the first time, I had the same problem. Spilt right at the ferrule, right in the middle of the wind range.

Is it common? No. Does it happen? Yup. But broken rods happen, so make sure to stock up. Awhile back I saw something online saying "if you dont break it, you're not trying hard enough" hahaha

At a guess i'd say the winds were around 15-20km's. My little cheapie stunt kite flew in it very easily i didn't even feel it on the lines. Maybe i just didn't have the ferrule set in far enough. I'll get some more and go try it again. On a positive note i did manage to get it to sit nicely on it's back and done a few hard turns into stalls(more of a fluke than skill) I have a lot to learn. But thats the best thing about a new hobby.

That can be a weak point, but it's not something that happens every time you fly or anything. Usually caused by the spreaders coming partially off the Ferrel during a crash. Some older kites that experienced that problem a lot used to glue a couple C-clips on the spreaders and hook a strong rubber band over them to pull the spreaders tight to the center T. Thread wrapping has also been used. I've seen some people use heat shrink tubing in that area also. It's also possible that the wrong Ferrel was put in the center T, it should be a 4" long Ferrel, not a 3" one.

Todays kites take a pretty hard nose dive to pull the spreaders apart, usually they come out of the leading edge connector first. A quick inspection after a hard nose dive might be in order until you are familiar with the kite and can tell the handling has changed thus requiring that inspection.
