Hi all, I have just purchased a Prism Classic Illusion and it has been brought to my attention that the spars are not made anymore. I am worried that if I break something, I won't be able to find the parts. Has anyone tried Re-framing an Illusion? If so, what spars did you use? Skyshark, Aerostuff.....etc. What spars would you recommend? What were your results in the how the kite handles?
Thanks in advance,
Alfredo.

Alfredo
I heard that Paul De Bakker is taking over making the Avia G-sport spars with Goodwinds in Seattle.  Might not be a problem for you

Thank you very much for letting me know about this.Feel much better now. Smiley This might be a common question, but If I wanted to re-frame the kite for whatever reason, do you think that they would have spars cut and made specifically for the kite? I've never had to deal with this, so I don't know much about spars and re-framing.
Thanks,
Alfredo.

Avia G-Force sticks should continue to be available. A good thing, because nothing else really works in the Illusion.

Ok, thank you guys for the information. So, just to confirm, where is the best place to purchase these spars? Goodwinds?
Thanks again,
Alfredo.

Maybe from an online store that claims:
We are an Authorized Prism Dealer and stock the complete line of Prism kites, accessories and replacement parts.
You'll find the replacement parts for the current kites listed here.
If you are looking for replacement parts for a "Classic" Prism kite odds are pretty good we can help out.  Just send us an email and let us know what parts you need.
In fact we are the shop that Prism calls when they need help with old kite parts ... we ARE the Prism Parts and Repair Specialists!

You can get G force rods at lots of shops however the rods for the Illusion lower spreader and lower leading edge were specially made by Avia for use in the Illusion.  They have not been made for years and I just sold my last ones.  I doubt they will be made again.  Fly your new Illy with care and if you should happen to break something we can cross that bridge when we come to it.  AS for re-framing I would strongly recommend that you don't.

I had my classic Illy out the other day, just a great way to make average winds worthwhile.

I always fly that kite just for the joy of seeing the light facet through the sail, doesn't come out often, but when it does it's always a pure kind of pleasure.  Cool

I remember when I acquired mine the info on framing was the same, 'don't break it'  Wink

I was watching this thread with some interest, and hope Wink

Sounds like I might need to be a little more careful with it...  Roll Eyes

the rods for the Illusion lower spreader and lower leading edge were specially made by Avia for use in the Illusion.
Strictly speaking only from the '98 model onwards  Grin You can make a close approximate with a few layers of shrink wrap in a pinch.

The problem in reframing the Illy was that all of the spars (bar the US) were pretty heavily curved by design. If you change the flex characteristics of the framing you'll undoubtedly change the sail profile too. I, for instance, tried G-Force SULs as lower spreaders and.... no.

Get a few G-Force ULs as spares if you want to keep the Illy flyable. This was always the advice.

ISTR The special part consisted of extra reinforcement below the lower LE connector, they would sometimes snap there but as Mike says they didn't do that mod immediately - a friend has one from when they were first produced and used to fly it quite a lot and I believe he's still on the original non-reinforced spars.
If you throw lots of slack if you're going to noseplant and avoid tip stabs it would seem the unreinforced GF-ULs will cope.

Hmmm, just checked mine, it's got a sail dated 10/24/97, to the best of my knowledge it's in original factory shape, would that mean I might have non-stuffed rods?

So what do I look for?? Although I'm loath to start pulling it apart, might be a worthy journey.

I think I need to check the date and spars of my Illusion before attempting to change or buy anything. As for re-framing, it is out of my mind. Smiley Thank you for all the tips and advice.I will post pictures when it arrives.

A reinforcing ring of carbon just below the LS on the LLE, like an extra wrap.... IIRC. It's been a while since I let my Illusions go  Embarrassed
