how to travel with kites as a carry on

One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

  Be taking a flight and i would like to carry a couple kites with me on the plane.I have never carried kites before so i have no clue as to whats allowed.I;m thinking a zepheyr hard case with kite and line sets with possibly a e3 or a rev in there broke down.I;m thinking i could carry the case as a carry on personal item.pretty sure it would stow in the compartment,but i dont want to get to the airport then they say sorry you cant bring that on.Not checking any bags.only a small other carry bag thats it.Do you think i can get away with it?only other way is just to leave kites at home and forget it.Zephyr hard case isnt that big and i have seen guys bring fishing poles on the plane..

Why not bring a bunch of kites and check the bag?

I've carried on a Z case, single kites, a couple banded together and, only a couple weeks ago, a 44 inch-long kite bag. Never had any problems. And the thinner it is, the more likely it is to fit in the tapered space behind the roller bags or above them in the front.

You just have to assure the sometimes-skeptical gate agent that it will fit overhead.

I have just taken 4 kites and used velcro straps to hold them all together broken done. Just be careful were you put them in the overhead bin or sometimes the strewardess have a space upfront that will hold them if you ask nice. You could also make a tube from carboard or pvc, others have used bazooka tubes(i think they are desgined to care fishing poles)
Some of the obvious things worth mentioning anyway; if security asks they are kites(not golf clubs or anthing else).Dont make jokes about them being anything else, they generally do not have a sense of humor.

i like to use a drawing tube....it draws less questions....looks more like i am bringing artwork or blueprints along with me...works just great every time i have done this....they are modular so the tube can be added onto for longer kites...but in general break them down as short as you can!!!

I have used the Zephyr case with a dual line and a Rev many times with no trouble. I even strap the case together with my travel guitar and call it one carry on.

So... a buzzard gets on a plane with a dead racoon under each arm, and the stewardess says "Hey, your only allowd one carrion!"
