One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

The local goodwill has one with a cabinet for $35.  Anybody know if it's a good machine for sewing kites?   Thanks. B

You can sew a kite on pretty much anything, if it has a 3 step zig-zag that's even better, we do hold out to find a machine with a 3 step zz. Can you test the machine? Get a needle, spool of thread and an old shirt for a piece of fabric. You can at least confirm the the motor & foot are working without thread, just run a piece of paper through it, no odd noises? Can you change stitch length & style? Does reverse work? Does it pull the paper through evenly?

We've been using a New Home from a garage sale that cost $10 with a box full of fabric and quilting books. They're probably nice, but you don't NEED a $3K Pfaff with IDT to sew a kite.

Hmmm... Goodwill Online sells it for $21 but without the cabinet. I think I see a 3 step ZZ there on the dial. It's an older machine but that is often a good thing, without having 200 different stitches (you'll use 3) requiring a dozen cams and complexities and it's internals are probably made out of metal rather then plastic.
