UFO kites?

One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

Has anyone any experience of building and flying 'UFO' magnus effect kites?( like the Prism Flip kite)



I'm not really a single line kite flier, but after watching an TV article on these kites I've recently built one based on a plan found on the internet.  Hoops are 3mm carbon rod and the rest of the 'frame' 4mm carbon tube covered with holographic film.  While it spins freely enough, I can only get it up to around 20' before it slowly sinks to the ground, so far I've been flying in medium winds. Any thoughts or tips to get it flying higher would be very welcome.

Fill the loops with Helium. Of course you would have to have 2 layers of material to make a pocket.

The Helium would last a few weeks.

It would also give the kite a more playful look.

  ......I suppose I should have expected that!!

I was once asked how I could be flying a kite ( the Shadow) when there wasn't any wind.....I told him it was made of anti -gravity fabric!...he seemed happy enough  with that!

I've a feeling it may be  my lack of SLK experience that may be a lot of the problem.

Any thoughts or tips to get it flying higher would be very welcome.

I have had one for ages and they are quite, quite awful. They demand highish winds to get anywhere and then get all snobby if it isn't laboratory grade too. In my experience they simply reach one flight angle and sit there - extra wind just makes it spin faster but doesn't add altitude.

I remember reading this a long time ago although I'm not sure if I learned anything.
