One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

For some reason my external HD switched letter from F to G and of course It create all kind of problems. How can I change it back? (PS I am on Window)

for windows xp

start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management

when that opens, in the left pane look under storage and click on disk management, then in the right pane right click on the volume you wish to change and select 'change drive letter and paths' from the popup menu.

someone else would have to answer for windows 7/vista

Vista:

• Right Click Computer (formerly My Computer in WinXP) Icon on desktop
• Select Manage from the context menu that appears
• Select Storage > Disk Management in the left hand panel
• Left Click one of the volumes (first column) in the upper right panel
• From the context menu, select Change Drive Letter and Paths...

Pretty sure that all of the above can be used in Win 7.

typically windows assigns drive letters on start up, my guess you had another device (camera, jump drive) plugged in when you last started.... remove that device and restart that should put the external back to F


I normally assign my externals a drive letter from the other end of the alphabet to avoid conflicts

just had this happen; letter changed from G to E. also added a few from repeated plugin of memory stick and CF card readers.  used the above method to check drive names and found the had not been changed.. absolutely no idea as to what actually happened..shut the computer down for a day and everything reset to normal...

Ahhh... the old 'restart'.
Solves more than 3/4 of computer problems...

Exactly what happened to you, a flash card or usb drive bumped your cd up a lettr, the name won't change just the drive letter. A reboot without those other externals let the drive get back its original letter.

Mike's advice to assign your optical drive a high letter is the best option but you need to do it before you install anything from a disk or when Office wants you to insert the disk it won't find it. I always used "S:" for see dee and did that from the real mode drivers on my boot floppy before installing Windows, those days are long gone now.
