It's been called The Great Delaware Kite Festival. I've been there the past 6 years. It's a very local, down home event. There are food venders, craft venders, and the Rehoboth Kite and Toy Company tent. The competition side is mainly local kite makers, highest kite, best "home made" kite, best "store bought" kite and a sport kite ballet and precision event. The wind depends on the mood if you know what I mean. The town comes out for this event and it's very bucolic. The history of the event centers around the lieutenant Governor and a maharajah from India decades ago having a fighter kite battle there at the park. On Good Friday. And the town has been having it then since. Sometimes there are a reenactment of that battle. As far a kite flying is concerned........it's a big field and outside of the main (roped off) field, everyone is all over the place flying. It's a madhouse but it's fun seeing the locals come out. Until several years ago The Valli Boys from Valley Forge PA have been doing demos for the crowd. Since then this guy from NJ (who will remain nameless) has been there along with his pals. Then the next day ( Sat. ) there's a gathering at the Rehoboth Kite and Toy store on the the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach with the Easter Bunny and snacks and games and Rachel. Sooooooo there you have it. Good Friday come to Lewes fly if you can find room and eat some funnel cake, Good Saturday go to the boardwalk see the Easter Bunny, join the egg toss and bol races, Easter Sunday...go to dinner.........
