I am looking to buy a new UL. Was wondering if anyone has flown or had
some input about a few kites I've been looking at?
1) Black Pearl
2) Ophidion

Many "modern UL" kites are labelled UL, but are heavier than their years earlier brethren.

This allows true claims of amazing trick capability because the kites are really closer to being a heavy UL or "light standard".

The question I would ask of you is how much of the UL do you want along with your tricks?

To me, a UL weighs in under 8 ounces (under about 230 grams).

The only Black Pearl UL I have flown weighed in near 255 grams ( 9 ounces), although this is an almost 8 foot kite, so UL is appropriate.

Newer ULs have longish standoffs which increase trick performance, but decrease low wind range.

I have not flown the Ophidion, but enjoyed both of your other choices.

Good luck. When in doubt, pick the one you think looks the best.  Smiley

It's not in your list, but I would add in the Widow Maker UL - fantastic kite!

The JJF UL and SUL both are great performing trickers. They are small-ish but feel bigger on the lines.

Thank you all for the input. I think I am leaning towards
the Black pearl so far.
It seems like the winds have been a little more stronger
around hear this year than normally

+1 for the talon ul not that the Black Pearl isnt as good. But the Talon feels more stable as the pearl has a different somewhat off canter feel which to me I like for the challange to tame the beast. In other words the Talon you will connect with much faster and with the Black Pearl your gonna have to work harder to connect with. But I think once you do it might have an edge on the talon.

I know this is an old topic, but rather than start a new one...I'm a newb and looking to buy a UL for the summer months when the winds die down here in IL. I know you should test drive and I'm having a hard time getting to festivals, but can someone recommend forgiving UL's for starters that won't break the bank? I've been looking at the swap meet, but I don't even know what I'm looking for. I have Prism's now, but not necessarily looking to stay in the family.
