I always work on this as well - economy of input so that it looks clean and smooth. My guess is that this is a a never ending process - you can always make it smoother. For me, it starts once I get the trick down and am not satisfied with how its execution looks.
I think you are on your way with the comete, just keep practicing those inputs until you can go ceiling to floor. Once your muscles know how it feels, you can do it fast or slow and it's very reliable. I found it helpful to learn in higher wind, but mostly because I was pounding in the kite, which you don't need to do.
