Tips: Making An Instructional Video

One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

My nephew (sort of) is getting married and the mom (my cousin) requested I get the prospective bride and groom a kite.

The smiling young man on the right is the intended victim groom.
(Yes, I explained to them that their delta has the leading edge spars at the wrong end.)


They have the 2 kites shown, flown on vacations. I am getting them a much larger 10 foot Gomberg Falcon with transition tail and line.


I'm going to have the kite before it is sent and thought a short video uploaded to the web would be good as this is going to be their first large kite.

Thought the video should cover:
1 Assembly
2 Attaching tail
3 Disassembly
4 Launch in low wind
5 Launch in high wind
6 Larkshead Knot
7 Safety (gloves, where to fly)

Never done a video like this before, so please make suggestions on anything not in the list above, or how to present the info, or the order or anything.

Camera angles, whatever. I'm more into making stills than motion so all constructive inputs welcomed.

First, you need an awesome soundtrack to accompany the video. Living here in Vegas should make it easy to contract a local modern new-age rock band and quality sound studio to create the original music.

For the video, nothing but ultra high resolution 1080 HD and if at all possible 1080 HD in 3D for the ultimate viewing experience.  Don't forget an overhead boom for those hard to see shots and to make sure you don't have unsightly shadows!  Be sure to use plenty of proper flood lighting, studio style sound effects and I would hire a couple of helicopters to get those amazing in-flight fly-by air close-up shots.  Picture in picture of the flyer and the kite in the same shot is always a bonus, you can overlay them with some seriously high rendered CGI backgrounds and 3D modeled animations.  Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic is one of the best and would be able to assist you with the CGI stuff.

Let us all know how it turns out and when the production release date is.

Looks like you've got the bases covered there, I would just film a normal setup, launch, recovery and pack up just like you would do any day on the field.  Just follow your normal thought processes, you get to the field and look around for a good spot considering where others using the park are located, where the trees, light poles and power lines are, etc. etc. Explain the safety points along the way, like when you put your gloves touch on why the gloves and the pull the kite can generate.

If you catagorize things into segments you'll fracture the flow, probably get it too long and lose the viewer. KISS  (Keep It Stupid Simple)
