What is meant by 2pt, 3pt, 5pt, 7pt?????

I recently read that someone had a set of 5 kites and there were listed as 2pt, 3pt, 5pt, 7pt and vented.  What does the (pt) mean, how does it work and for the "average" flyer does it make a big difference??

pt is the SkyShark designation for tapered spars. 2pt being the lightest, most flexible, and 7pt being the heaviest, stiffest of the lot.
I'm guessing in this case they are referring to the lower spreader.

Normally,

The SUL (lightest) version of a kite is framed (mostly or all) in 2PT spars.
The upper spreader is almost always a pultruded (non-tapered) spar. But the other 6 sticks can be tapered.

At the other end of the wind range would be a vented (heaviest, usually with screens to let some of the wind flow through the kite) version framed in 5PT or 7PT sticks.

Dual-line kites have a limited range for best flying. So when the wind changes from 5 to 15 mph, most kiters will change from a UL or standard to a vented.

In addition what the others said, the number usually indicates how many layers of carbon prepreg where used in the construction of the spar.

2PT 2 layers,
3PT 3 layers etc

Other manufactures generally use a different naming scheme, Avias is especially confusing. Since for Avia a SUL spar is heavier and stiffer then a UL spar Dynamic simply uses the design weight of the spar for its name Dynamic 12T, Dynamic 9T for example. Aerostuff is another animal, Gold, Silver, Blue, Zen, S. And Revolution names their spars once with a logical system, but lately more and more new spars came out that just have a catchy name. Zen, Race, Greenrace, SLE, 2 wrap, 1.5wrap. 3 wrap. 4 wrap.
Pultruded spars usually are just named by the manufacturer with the diameter and maybe a designation for the wall thickness. Excel 6mm Cruise, Strong, Structil 4mm, Avia 0.2300 etc.
