As Ron Graziano might say,

"There was a time when an event of this sort would draw a lot of interest."

Well, I'm excited from a selfish reason of getting to see some new kites during the new "Demo Day" before the main indoor event.

But, where is the excitement?
Too much politics and recession?
Katy Perry's divorce a distraction?
Kim Kardashian's $600,000 appearance fee for her New Year's Eve Party in Vegas got you bummed?

It's new kites. Or are we jaded by only being open to high end dualies which seem almost interchangeable these days?

Which of the kites from last year are still selling or even available?

I'd definitely attend if I could, but not being a trader and living on the other side of the pond ...

Look forward to your photos of this year's event, as I'm always excited about new kites!

Hard to get excited about an event we can't attend. Didn't you get escorted out after crashing the party last year? We'll look forward to coverage of the event if anybody attends and writes up something. Otherwise it's sort of a non-starter for us consumers.

There was a time when we used to get lengthy reports from KTAI but with no news theres nothing to get excited about.
From discussions last year that seems to be just the way they want it  Roll Eyes

Well, John, now that you've posted something about it, I'm interested, but there hasn't been any other hype yet. I'm sure most people don't know when it happens.

The KTAI is being held here in Vegas once again this year.  John was escorted out because he slipped in on the setup day when the show was closed.  He did have a regular entry pass for the actual days of the show though. Smiley

The KTAI is an important event for shop owners as it gives us a chance to meet with the distributors and discuss the business end of the industry such as production runs, supply, pricing, shipping, new products (to come and being currently released).  It is like a buyers market for kites.  I don't think that the general public would really enjoy attending the convention itself, but the demo day that is being held on Wednesday would be something that I feel all kiters would love to be at.  The demo day is a day set aside for flying and testing the new products.  The rest of the convention is held indoors in the main hall and the only kites that will be flying are the ones that happen to fall from the display racks while shop owners/buyers are shuffling through them.

Personally, I haven't heard much new stuff being released at the show this year.  I think it has to do with the downturn of the economy (don't care what the Pres. and the Govt. say, we're in a depression).  Many of the kite manufacturers are pulling back to help save on expenses and costs.  With sales low, it is hard to bring out new products and cover the expense of production.  Hopefully as the economy begins to climb out of the hole it is in, things will change and we will see many new products in the next few years.

That being said, all the major players will be at the show.  Revolution, Prism, Skydog, Premier, New Tech, HQ, etc....  Many of the high end boutique kite makers such as Blue Moon, Skyburner, JoE, Level 1 etc... have a very hard time affording the costs of booth rentals and attending/staffing the booth.  Many of the kite stores now days only carry the economy or entry level kites which makes it hard for a boutique kite maker to justify the costs when they get the bulk of their sales from direct one-on-one sales with the end customer or with a very small and select group of stores.

Even though there hasn't been much released about new products, there always seems to be a few surprises that pops up at the show.  Hopefully John can get some pictures of them and share them with the rest of the kiting world. Smiley

The KTAI is scheduled for January 19-21.  Demo day is Wednesday Jan 18th.  It will be held at our normal flying field here in Vegas on Boulder Highway and Russell Road, same field we hold our weekly Friday Night Fun Fly's.  Official demo time is scheduled for Noon - 5:00 pm.

Each year we've reported on the show in our Weekly Update.

There was a time when there were a lot of new, cutting edge, and advanced products being offered. But in recent years, the emphasis has shifted toward the broad consumer market. Said another way, if you don't find most kite stores interesting, you won't find the trade show interesting either...

The show is closed to the public. It is a business gathering where wholesale prices are negotiated. Hours are very limited. And as elitist or exclusive as it sounds, the KTA has decided that inviting the public in complicates that process.

We have a few new pieces this year -- an expansion of our Kabuki Rokkaku series, a collection of lightweight indoor gliders, and a number of cellular pieces. The 2012 catalog is online at http://www.my-catalog.biz/GKites/.

The main buzz this year is that labor costs are going up. Material costs are going up. Shipping costs are going up. And as a consequence, the price of kites is going up.

"That being said, all the major players will be at the show.  Revolution, Prism, Skydog, Premier, New Tech, HQ, etc.... "

We'll be there too. Always have been.... Wink Actually, I think the biggest and most successful dealer in the room is one most of you don't know -- In the Breeze.

Weird.... google cached page shows kites and wind things.  However the page gets re-directed to a page for llamas products and supplies for "alternative livestock".  Huh

I understand about branching out in the economic downturn, but that's a bit of a stretch.  Cheesy

Llamas? Hmm. I typed "in the breeze" and got redirected too. Try http://www.inthebreeze.com/

They are a great company and easy to work with. Based in Bend, Oregon. But their products are aimed at the (much larger) casual and gift market than to us serious kiters.

Our gliders will be here in April. Only have prototypes right now. But with the exception of newest designs, we are completely stocked up with another container due here in February. That's a plus, considering two orders we placed at the show last January with "major' firms were not delivered until November. Sigh.

All of our stuff is available from GWTW. Steve just needs to call me.
