One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

so we can link our signature to our current list of kites/past kites?  It's basically a sticky topic so that others can see what kites we have.. It's not mandatory to do: rather it's more of the spirit of keeping inventory for ourselves.

just throwing it out there.

Crandall,

Most people have kite inventory which constantly changes (buying, selling, giving, receiving, making). At best the list would be a snapshot of a moment in time.

People would not keep the list up.
For some, it would look like others are bragging about what they had.
For some, it would seem to be a "who's got more money" type of thing.
Many people don't want others to know every kite they have.

The spirit of your idea is good.  Smiley

Agree, I can see the pros n cons of doing that.  I try to keep a list of current kites I own, just so I can better decide on what to sell/trade/give when I'm in the mood, what I haven't flown in ages, etc. but I'm not sure I'd want to put that up in a public forum.  I can just see the PM's flying once people started posting their lists.  Heck, I'd probably do it myself.  Wink

Perhaps if it were somehow anonymous?

Not trying to create a kite snobbery but just a topic so that others can see what kind of kites you fly or have tried.  Furthermore, people could always send a pm so that they can offer trades or feedback about how to mod kites.

I personally don't mind if you have 90 kites or 3 kites.  it's just a matter of the journey.

so for example this would be me:  (also look at my signature below where it says my kite bag with a tinyurl link.  Unfortunately, GWTW's forum doesn't allow text to embed links over text so that if you hover over kite bag it would open up a new window)

basically the point is that people can look at what other kites  or accessories that they use and think AHA!  that sounds like something i could buy!  i.e. if you didn't have wind brakes you would think hey, maybe i need wind brakes! or a wind meter, or an ipod video for tutorials.... etc.

As long as everyone follows a similar format, it'd be an public organized inventory list.

It's sort of like a "what's in your A-Bag thread" however if a dedicated thread was created, you could also reference who you sold the kite to (if you wanted to disclose that.)

It also shows trust in your kite buying/selling/trading.  but i digress.

I still think it'd be a fun thing to share.  nobody's forcing you to do it.   Smiley

For those of us that have been at this for a while now that is going to make for a very long, quite difficult to navigate list.

I'm not going to inventory all of my lines either. And I consider myself quite adept at listmaking.

Overall it's (to my mind) a noble aim but probably a hamstrung one. Feel free to create a topic in a section with a tame moderator who can prune, stickify and generally administrate it when needed.

you could easily make a google document list of your stable and then put the link into your signature to share it...

the other reason why it was frowned upon was because then if someone is looking for specific info on a Quantum if they searched the forum every single post would show up in the list that has that kite in the mentioned in the thread including each time someone has them in the signature....that would not be as helpful to the person searching...

I try to keep a online folder of pictures up to date with my kites.....like Zippy points out it is hard to keep an entire list up to date if there are lots of accessories etc...

One way to do so would be to host your own Kitealog so you can manage it, mine would be like the link below. but the list could get quite long specially if we list every other kite we have had in the past, this just my dual lines, i have not yet kitealoged all my single line or quads  Shocked

Current Kitealog.

I suppose that might be an issue, but isn't there a relevancy counter when you search "quantum kites help"?  Not overly familiar with how this forum handles searches.

a kite log on webshots could work, but then it is quite a bit of work for a user to post up pictures of their kites rather than just a list.

can we give it a trial run?  I.e. Create a new directory under the kites! Kites! Kites! Section with the quoted title?. If it's too much of a hassle then I suppose the idea could be abandoned.  The thread wouldn't need moderation since it's user based thread linking.

just think it would be good to encourage more kite networking through the forum.  This isn't mandatory at all.  Just more along the enthusiast sharing shenanigans.

That is why I suggested a Google Document...you can have it open to anyone, or invite certain users as editors/adders of info....and just build it up as a spreadsheet....just like in Excel you can have each user have their own tab....
I use Google Documents all the time at work (the US government is using google now for all email and as well for online document sharing like this).
https://docs.google.com
you could even share it into google+ as well.

Actually now that i am thinking about this it would work very well there!

I don't think this will ever happen.  Its one thing to take pics of your  kites for your own photo album and share that with people but to keep it up to date with your current list JUST so other can know what you have is kind of pointless and IMO a waste of time.  Last time I did something like this I got flooded with "Do  you want to sell...." e-mails and "why do you have this kite in your list if you sold it?" crap.   IMO forget this idea and move on.  Besides there are always "whats in your A bag" threads popping  up all the time.  THis is more trouble than its worth.
