The Shadow was a breakthrough kite for me and I still own one. First kite I could ever multi-lazy.........It is a bit challlenging when you are heavy handed though.  One comparison, other than price, between the Talon UL and the Shadow is the Talon's turtle tends to be shallow in comparison to a lot of other kites, requiring quick inputs once on it's back.
One other is the Shadow will definitely fly lower than the T UL.  Of course, the more skills one has the less important that becomes.......For my money the Shadow is the one that will take you a long way towards your goals as a tricker.

The ds ul and talon ul are pretty similar in my opinion.
I do agree that the talons turtle isn't ecspecially deep.
Both kites are still very capable.

If your deciding between a ds and talon just get the one that appeals more to you visually.
Or maybe let the price decide...the talon will prob run you a bit more.

I have yet to fly a shadow but it seems many people are pleased with it.
The only negative thing I've heard about it is it likes precise inputs.
The trouble with all Of this comparing is everybody has their own preferences.
Chances are you won't know if you like something till you fly it..better start collecting haha.

The DS UL is a flat spin monster, but is a bit more challenging in the pitch direction.  Flic-flacs and JLs in particular required  an adjustment in technique, at least for me.  It certainly needs plenty of slack for the nose to come round into the fade.

The Talon UL is more consistent in terms of the way it flies.  Only had limited time on it, so difficult to draw that much comparison.

In many ways they are like their standard siblings, the DS has the emphasis on the spin axis and the Talon on the pitch axis.

Can't go wrong with either.

If you like the Soul, I'd go for the UL version if you can.

To me, the DS and Shadow are more free-flowing, keep it moving sorts of kites.  The Talon less so from what I recall of flying one, but still along those lines.  I've only flown a Soul briefly, but I recall it feeling more stable and slower.

If you already like the kite and just want one that flys in less wind, then why not go that way if you can?  If you want more variety, then any of these would provide that I suppose.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks tpatter!
Yes, I like the Soul. But, apart from the fact that I've been told it is difficult to get and it is not even advertised in the FW web site, since my experience with kites is short and narrow I did think I would like some variety.

I don't really understand the difference you describe between DS UL & Shadow with respect to Talon UL.
Do you mean they must be more constantly pulled and tugged?

Cheers,

N.

Aaaaaahhhhh!!!! One more kite noooooo pleeeeease.... !   Wink
Just kidding.

OK, Skyburner does have excellent reputation and both Ocius and WM seem to be excellent.
I'll consider it but I think I'll probably stick to choosing between Talon UL or Deep Space UL for this time.

But, of course, I still have a long kite flying life ahead of me (I hope)   Smiley

Their flying style is a bit different - if you watch videos of folks flying/tricking the DS in particular (check the VF archives), you get a sense for the pace and tricking style of the kite.  If you are looking for some variety, any of these kites are a good choice.

I've got a friend who flys nothing but the DS and newer Gem because he feels that other kites don't have the same sort of fluid motion to them.  Others like sharp, angular movement and precision in the kite, sometimes at the cost of things like flat rotational spins.  Then, of course, others like all levels in between - all different styles.

if you are used to FW kite as the soul...

maybe it is a suggestion to try or buy a silfer fox UL( 2.3 or 2.5)...some variety, with some equal technique input wise

never flown any of FW kites though...

i owned a DS std.....i liked it...very tricky,but i like bigger movements.....so i stick with my nirvana family Wink
i have flown a Talon UL.... i liked more then my DS.... a little deeper turtle, but for me a big pro

whatever you choose....you can't go wrong with any suggested kite, good luck!!!

Thank you very much to all!

I think I have made up my mind on the Talon UL (for this time).  Wink

So now the difficulty will be on choosing colors (sigh)  Roll Eyes
It is already being too difficult!
But I must get a move on since my birthday is coming closer.

Thanks!!!!

Great choice! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Most people who buy them love their Talon's and secondhand ones are very rare. I believe JOE have a TV channel where you can see your kite being made.

.....I did warn you about the colouriser!  Wink......
