A consumer survey was conducted to examine patterns in ownership of personal computers, cell phones and VCR's. The following data were obtained: 317 people had computers, 234 had cell phones, 262 had VCR's, 64 had all three, 65 had none, 90 had phones and VCR's, 57 had phones but no computer or VCR and 102 had computers and VCR's but no phone. What percent of people surveyed owned only a phone?

I have done this venn diagram so many times it is drving me crazy. I am in math 107 right now it is the only class I need to graduate. Can someone help me with this? I would like to see it step by step.

Thanks so much..  debbie

Let me know if I overlooked something or something looks off.  If want to discuss anything feel free to PM me a phone number and convenient time to call.

Slight error in the maths Sam.  The VCR only figure should be 6.

It's more years than I care to remember since I did Venn diagrams, but I woud have presented the none portion as a box going round the VCR, phone and computer circles.

Hope this helps,

Jon

Thanks for the proofreading....corrected now.  Nice to know that the logic still works, even if the typing on an unlit keyboard is less than perfect.   Wink

I am sure there are stylistic/syntax rules for Ven Diagrams, but  since I haven't done them in....

well, you generally had to have other pack members keep a look out for sabre tooth tigers while doing them back then....

I'll settle for anything that my strangely wired brain  Huh can work through.  Cheesy

90 had phones and VCR's

The way I read that, no statement about owning a computer is made here, so these 90 should include the 64 that have all three, leaving 26 that own a VCR and phone, but no computer. That leaves 70 owning only a VCR (rather than 6).

I was at a casino last night and ended up working on the solution on a cocktail napkin.

My last Venn diagram class was in the 60s.  Huh

The excellent solution presented above is a bit confusing with the 4th circle intersecting some of the others (but not all),
and then the numbers applied.

Here is the solution I came up with which probably violates all the Venn rules, but makes sense to me.
Note that there is no unexplained portion, although it is more confusing. I doubt if I could have figured
it out without seeing the math. Thank you for that.

To stay consistent:
Black numbers given.
White numbers calculated.
Total calculated.
Phone % calculated.

It's basically a donut cut into 3rds and then into 4 concentric rings. The donut hole is for people
with none of the 3 items.

Thanks to all of you..  John, your diagram was as nice as your photos are.
And after all the practice I did with these stupid problems there was not one of them on the exam!! I don't know how they figure this is practical math and I am going to be so happy when this class ends.. I just keep telling myself one more month!!

I love these kind of problems...
I always send them to my daughter, who left me in the dust when she was in the 8th grade.
i thought i was good with math, but i never graduated college with a math degree as her.  Wink

final Score...

Sam, she said you were VERY close, just one goof somewhere in venn rules.. (i dont know)

John, just as you said, you broke all rules of a venn diagram, she agreed, :>)) but you too got the correct answer :>)

here is her email reply to Debbies original question i sent to her..
thanks for the fun...
