I have both a Sano SS and a SSL.

First, put the shape-shifter setting for the standoffs all the way outboard. The kite is much more pitch-happy then. You do lose a lot of the light-wind efficiency that way, but as with everything in kiting, it's a trade-off.
Secondly, try doing the two-pop entry. Throw the kite in to a backflip. You can let the kite settle into the backflip, no need to rush it. Then give a slight bump on the lines followed by a lot of slack. This will work with the shape shifters even in the middle setting and in light winds.
That's what has worked for me. Just remember the SSL prefers a light touch and floaty style, and it will give you more than you know how to ask it for.
