Straight from Ken's colorizer, David. Teal (top row, 8th color), light blue (top, 5th color), black, purple (bottom, 7th color) - based on the colors in your Airbow image.
FWIW, this is my suggestion based on your posts above.
- decide whether your primary desire is the 3-d effect or not.
- decide whether you prefer a symmetrical or asym color layout
- pick your top 3 colors. IMO, the tri-panel layout of the 61/49 sails lends itself very well to 3 colors; more and it gets busy and loses its simple elegance, but it can certainly be done.
- decide if a 4th color would work for you as an accent on the keel
A couple of illustrations from the many colorizer images when Ken made mine.
My final design. Black, gray, purple, plum. I went against my own 3-color rule but used the plum as a shade of purple to enhance the 3-d effect between front and rear sails.
My second choice. Again, used the plum to enhance the 3-d effect from the brighter purple. This layout assumes the light is coming from the top left.
Similar to my final design, but I didn't like the asymmetry front sail to rear sail.
I generally prefer darker colors toward the bottom (TE) of a kite as I think they look heavier and therefore more balanced. Not always, but usually. In this case, the 61/49 is a diamond so I thin the darker colors can work on the outside also, kind of like a frame. My final design...
Hope that helps. It's just my preferences and (il)logic. Bottom line, you have to do what works for you.
