I recently found a Vivitar 3900 flash gun.  does anyone know of a way to trigger this off a digital camera?

sounds like you're looking for a slave, the likes of which can be found at the link below. afaik wein has always made the best.

edit: my answer was if you meant a way to trigger it from like a point and shoot (with a built in flash) but if you mean a dslr then you'll just need the right cable, which depending on your camera could plug into a port, or sit on the hot shoe..

Please confirm that the your cameras trigger voltage and the flashes trigger voltage are compatible.

Otherwise bad things are likely to happen.  :'(

Digital camera is a very broad term, sort of like kite - box, stunt, flat, diamond, parafoil.
So the answer depends on several things:
1. does the camera have a hotshoe?  What is the trigger voltage required for the flash and what does the camera put of if it does indeed have a hotshoe?
Great website here that talks about trigger voltage.  It warns that older flashes have high trigger voltage and can be dangerous for various brands - Canon it's a no no for voltages over 6, and the Vivatar flash is 9 volts.
2. does the camera sync with your flash?  Most modern flashes have sync capability that allow for correct exposure and not just a full powered flash every shot.  This screws with exposure and may washout your subject.
3. triggering can be done with a slave unit, sometimes they are remote and electronic and can cost more than the price of a flash that may work with your "digital camera".

Good luck, there are lots of good resources online.  Google it!
