Silver Fox 2.3 Pro UL spine question

I'm not at all experienced in repairing or building, so this may be a silly question.

The spine on this kite is a dynamic tapered spar (I don't recall the size), but it's cut well short. The bottom of the spine is another (straight?) spar inserted inside the tapered spar. However, the bottom piece is split along most of it's length, like a bamboo sword, into four pieces. It's been like that since I received it new, because I recall noticing it when I took the weight off for the first flight. Is it supposed to be split up the spine (and why?), or was it shipped damaged?

The insert should not be split.
It somehow got damaged along the way.
It should be inexpensive to fix, as long as you can get it out of the tapered spine spar.
Be very careful though, split carbon spars can give you a very nasty splinter.

Thanks. Getting it out isn't a problem, it's not glued in. There's only a stopper glued onto the insert, which slides freely into the spar.
