I treat my IS like a daily driver. 

So cartwheel recoveries are part of the routine.

The nose has worn on both sides where the leading edge spars,

even though they have vinyl end caps, have worn through the material.

The lovely Bambi has told me she will sew on a new nose.

What material would be best suited?

Should the old nose be removed or just sewn over?

Anything else to be wary of for beginner kite repairers?

If you're not stuck on doing it yourselves, mike would do a dandy job. If you are, cordura would be the material you'ld likely want (400d?), and especially on such a light kite remove the old one.

Mike replaced the nose on my nirvana after you flew it  and did great work.

For a proper repair, put it in a tube and send it back to Tim.

i think i may have some orange le edge material. What is on it now?

I can say what I did for my Vapor when I restored it, well I cut away the original nose, made a cardboard template and cut its shape from Steve's 3 in. webbing just because it's thinner than 2 in. one.
Finally sewn the new nose as shown:





I strongly think that sewing a new nose over the old one is a very bad idea, even if DS nose was made with dacron, if I had to repair it, I'd replace it for sure.
If sail appears worn under the old nose, simply add a little stripe of icarex or mylar to reinforce it.

what is the nose made out of already? ripstop or cordura??
i am one for pull the rods out and mail to Tim for a maker repair....

For my nose repairs I use the thin vinyl backed dacron used for kite bags or the heavy material MLD uses in their bags.  After the new nose is done a coat of  "plasti-dip" on the top 1/8" makes them bulletproof

I was so scared watching my friend John fly my <new to me> IS, yankin and spankin it like there's no tomorrow, but he DID show up to visit me during my inpromptu visit.

Plasti-dip may work, but I could never bring myself to add that to a Benson.    His kites are works of art to me.

+1 but send only the sail into a letter to keep the postage (and the work time for Tim) down.
