Welcome to the GWTW Forum.
Guests (non-registered users) can view the forum but are unable to post.  If you don't have anything to say then why would you bother to register?
One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

I can verify that the kite simply will not rollup, comete, JL, Taz, insane, or even half-axel with this removed!
Tom are you really sure about that???? removing the DEVICE voids the warranty so be very careful how you answer(if you even bother lol)

I'm referring to the bit of line. Everything else in the picture I can work out.

Mike.
Consider the reason that noses have gotten narrower and you will soon realize the reason Lam does it, or at least one of them.  Lam has a few unique ways of tuning the dynamic balance of a kite sail that work well.  Years ago a few kites had a spreader that did the same thing.  Help shape the lower keel of the sail for tuning how the keel acts, others did it by changing the cut of the sail between the inner SO and tail or curving the tail of the spine.  All of them serve to change the drag on the tail making a kite lay over differently.

It increases your kite's athleticism.
Just accept it, you can do nothing about it.
Also it improves tackling in space, whatever the hell that means. Huh

Rather sadly, the most plausible explanation here. Cheesy

think Bernoulli....

You mean the line is largely inapplicable across most of the kite's flying envelope ? (I refer you unto pages 14 and 15 of this).
