Upgrade?

One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

How much of an upgrade is it from a SF 2.3 Pro to R-Sky Krystal Std?
Is it worth the $$$?

How much do you rank your skill level? Have you explored the SF 2.3 Pro completely and done every tricks it's capable of?
And why upgrade?

I wouldn't think of it as an "upgrade".....more an "addition". A good reason/excuse to acquire another kite....
I have cheaper kites and costly kites and each one has it's own charm and characteristic(s).

The SF seems to require more than 5MPH to keep afloat, so maybe I'll keep the SF for higher winds.

Also, partly because I do not want to go for actual UL yet. I thought maybe Krystal can reach a lower wind without switching to weaker framed ULs...

If the Krystal is anything like the Nirvana standard it's got a decent amount of pull and it's lower end isn't as great as some other kites.

Each kite has its own wind range. I'm not sure about the Krystal but I DO know the Skyburner Widow Maker has a really nice range and it can do just about anything. Same with the Benson Deep Space. The Blue Moon Exile has a nice lower end but it really starts to pull at the upper range. They all have a lower end than the Nirvana. I have all these kites and I really like them all.

Most standard kites will struggle to fly in much below 5mph without a lot of leg work - you are really getting into UL territory.  The Flying Wings Soul will fly lower than many and will get down to 4mph maybe 3 on a good day but you are pushing it for a standard kite. Why not a UL? many are tougher than you may think.

I would not recommend the Krystal if you want to enjoy flying in lower winds. 

Haven't flown one,  but heard good reviews on the HQ shadow.  Reasonable price.

You might want to wait for Bell Chiu latest creation.. DUENDE Should be release early or mid 2013.  looks very capable.  I especially like the UL because I saw it in action.  The wind was minimal when Bell flew it.

Keep the SF pro for now.  Keep practicing till then. :-)

I'd go for a UL.  I think ULs are often the best model of many kites mostly because the wind you are likely to fly them in is about perfect for tricks.   That, and you have a kite that requires a little more work on the bottom of the wind range and a little more care in the top end, but a good all-around nice range.   They also have enough mass to still be fun which many SULs do not.  You may find its the only kite that you fly!

I like the SF for tricks, but it doesn't go very low and also does not fly with sail pressure.  My Exile standard, for example, would fly better in low wind than my SF 2.5 L.   A lack of powered up flight requires the flyer to compensate considerably when flying in low wind.   On the other hand, those kites are often more manageable in higher winds.

To me, the Krystal looks like an excellent choice for precision, but I would look at some others if it were me such as the TNT UL or one of Lams SULs which fly low, but maintain all the fun.

You can take out the top spreader and tail weight to drop the wind range, but it still will not be an UL.

Better to think of UL as a lighter frame, not weaker. 

Not much stress on the frame at 2-5 mph vs. Silver fox at 15mph 

UL's are not built for abuse but can last for years. Never broken a rod in any of my ULs and the oldest is over 10 years old. Based on my local winds, I'm flying a UL 60% of the time. Thats a lot of quality air time vs sitting at home waiting for wind.
