Hey Norm,
Nice beach. I can see why the Spanish claimed it, beautiful. If I ever make it down that way I think I'm going to have to stop there for a fly!
Can't wait to see what you have in mind for the next challenge.
If you ever make it this way don't pass up any opportunity you might have to stop and fly a while. I did get one beginner "trick challenge" video taped. I need to tape a couple more "trick challenge" videos during the Morro Bay Kite Festival the last week-end in April. One will be presented especially to tpatter. The other will be for Intermediate fliers. I have a few in mind. I did have three different tricks on video, but my baseball cam wasn't set down far enough. After I got it "set" proper I only got one trick video. I'll have them ready to go by the time this challenge is completed. I've got a couple of doosies in mind.
Hey Norm,
That beach is amazing. What scenery you west coasties have !
The Prism forum folks had a fade challenge a few years ago, where the participants were supposed to hold a fade for 30 seconds, I believe. Maybe it was on the Classy Kite forum, I forget. I don't think there was any prize, though...
~Rob.
Rob, I have hounded everybody I can to learn the fade. It is so important to help you move on to other tricks. I did get some video of the fade that looks fairly good. Mine is quite a bit longer than 30 seconds. west coasties...
when i was filming for VF25 i tried to do this trick
no, i'm not a beginner, so save the straps for someone else
maybe watching my handwork and feetwork can help other people
Thanks for posting your video. All input is welcome and important from all levels of fliers.
Yes, your video will most certainly help. It's all about "slack" which equates to handwork & footwork.
thanks Krijn
yes, maybe that's true
a possible explanation: when the kite returns in the fade-position, you can let the nose go a bit higher, pulling it down again is a bit easier that way
the tnt ul comp isn't a great kite for this trick (i think the std and strong are much better (or the ul, without the competition), they are easier to yoyo), i had to use firm inputs
Firm inputs are a good thing for this trick. As soon as you give a hard/firm input throw your arms out in front of you as fast as you can to create the ALL SO IMPORTANT SLACK.
I did notice that you use very firm, commanding inputs. Most of the kites I fly don't require much more than a flick of the wrist, and a bunch of slack. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong ? You don't seem to use too much room moving forward, and when I try this trick, I move at least 5 feet forward per cycle. I've never flown a TNT, either, so I have no idea how much different the inputs may be.
How much you move forward will depend on the kite and the wind speed. In my video I am flying the Talon UL. I don't move. The wind speed was perfect.
Joe, You have been "grand-fathered" in. There is no hurry for you. Although I am anxious to see your first video using your new Widowmaker.
Rob if the conditions allow you to flic flac without moving your feet, you do not need to move much at all for the over rotation The fearless do not need a whole lot of input to bring them out.For me it seems, I pull to go into the trick about as much as I pull to get out
in Krijn's vid the song is about rhythm ps I really like the looks of your new kite
Absolutely right to get in a rhythm. I have passed this rhythm thing along to a few participants.
If you check out Si,s video (Roisinroisin)you will see that like Ko suggests there is very little forward movement required for this trick. I fly with Si and he can bang these out all day long and barely takes a step forward. We use Talons and I suppose like everything else it all depends on the strength of the wind and the kite as to how you get the slack in the lines to allow the rotation.
Right on the money.........kite and wind will determine forward movement. I also think the strength of the input also plays a part. Simon does a really nice job and I am glad he posted so everybody can see he is not moving. I wish I could make a "trick challenge" especially for him, but I'm not skilled enough.
I have found the lenght of roll up is kite specfic. I'm 6'2 and can rollup my Talon and Tekken with out stepping forward. full size kites (WM,Mongoos and Infinity) require me to step forward.
Have problems rolling up my shadow and WM UL in really low winds 2-3mph. when I get a little more wind, they rollup fine. but now I can fly the talon any maybe even the Tekken and they rollup quickier and don't require me to walk forward, so I fly them.

Once you notice your kite is NOT rotating around until the nose is pointed back towards you, but hits the ground..........You need more slack, so take a couple quick steps forward.
Thanks Wayne I need the up lift... Temps in 20's today and it feels like 3 degrees.
If you watch Norms video he barely moves forward or back ward... I extend my arms out more in front and then backwards all the way... I do my best when I imatate Norm extending his arms all the way forward....
No, I don't move forward, because the Talon UL fit the wind conditions perfect.
This is true here. Not only is movement kite specific but wind specific as well. Common mistake I make and I have seen other make is not doing a strong enough input. You need to be more firm that regular flic flac inputs. If you do a regular flic flac input it will require more movement to get it to roll up. Basically do the same input as you would if your trying a yoyo.
Yep, strong input and it is kite & wind specific for sure. I first started doing this trick with a JITB Light. I would literally have to run to get it rolled under.
With the same wind conditions/speed I'll bet I would not have had to move to complete the trick using the Talon UL.
THANKS TO ALL FOR POSTING AND HELPING WITH YOUR INPUT AND VIDEOS
OH, DON'T FORGET TO CHECK YOUR FLIGHT LINES OFTEN AND KEEP THEM EQUAL IN LENGTH
YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED HOW MUCH IT WILL HELP
Disclaimer: I am not an accomplished flier. I only know a handful of tricks. I am only trying to help out a few beginners to learn a lot faster than I did. I am ASHAMED of how long it took me to learn a handful of tricks. I think with the help of ALL of the post in this thread it will help the beginners tremendously.
