STX 2.3 leading edge

Pages: (1/1)

JWilson:

Does anyone know if the leading edge on a 2.3 is one piece ?
I'm trying to break mine down for travel and  can not seem to separate it.
How do people travel on airlines with full or oversized kites.
Thanks
Jack

They are traveling by train or ferrule the leading edge...  :D

Will Sturdy:

All the 2.3 standards had a one piece poltruded leading edge. This doesn't really break down. You could cut it in two and add a ferrule, but that will reduce the strength and slightly affect balance.

the Comp version had a two piece wrapped leading edge, which does break down.

When flying I break down my kites and stuff them in a hard-case ski carrier.

I don't think so.

A 2 parts leading edge will be a bit stiffer (but more fragile) than a one part L.E.

Will Sturdy:

Cutting a poltruded spar and adding a ferrule will create a stress riser that will make the spar weaker.

Switching the kite over to a two-piece wrapped frame will make it stiffer and maybe stronger depending on the spars used.
