One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.

Lam, I have one pair of Your straps. Very nice and clean design, no knots and apsolutly free for caching lines during fly.....
Thank You

After reading this post I'm wondering if I should continue to add a four-knot line-equalizer to my Custom Flight Straps.
It's an additional cost to me and is very time consuming. I have had my flying lines catch on the knots, but rarely. So, for me they are an advantage.

we've spoken and you can expect to see California Custom Straps back at GWTW this spring.
I  thought I would get some more opinions as I know everybody likes something different.
Should I make these up with a four-knot line-equalizer? Of course, Steve will make the final decision. So, I guess the question would be with or without?

I prefer them without, but could see why folks would want them.  I cut down to one or sometimes just take it off and connect to the plastic piece directly.

I put the bridle loop on the lines and do minor length adjustments between recuts with a knot in that line.

Personally, I would keep your straps like they are, but use a lighter line weight.  If someone doesn't like it, they can just adjust like I do by taking it off.  I think most people would likely just use it as-is.

With. One could always take them out if they caused that much trouble.

I'm not sure I have a strong opinion either way. I've never had straps with pigtails. Would the reduced cost be passed on to customers?

Larksheading the lines directly to the D ring is the way to go if simplicity is the goal. If your lines are off so much that a knotted pigtail is handy, then line snags are probably the least of your worries.  Wink

I can see how it would take quite a bit of time to put in the knots in even spacing.

I say put in a pigtail with enough length so the user could put in an adjustment knot or two if he wants them.

So, in one word: without.

I'd say leave them as is and let the buyer choose.  I prefer having the pig tail myself and have never had issues with line snags at the straps.  I always fly with my index fingers on the line and the pigtails are a lot nicer than the bare line or sleeve loops.  I rarely use the equalizer knots but they do make for good fingertip grip .

I am very surprised at mostly "without" opinions for the line-equalizers. I decided to add them to the straps, especially for beginners so they would have a simple and fast way to equalize their lines in the field. In fact all of my personal straps have them added, because I like them. Again, it only goes to show how all of us like something different, or at least me. ha ha The cordage (accessory cord) is difficult to find and especially finding a good size (2mm). They are very very time consuming to add them on. So, thanks for ALL of your opinions. I think I will STOP adding them, except to mine and now CA Ike's.

kepople: There is NO reason to add them on, especially if you are going to remove them.

red sweater: Yes, the reduced price ($.25) per pair would be passed on.

Allen Carter: Yes, simplicity and fast in-field line-equalizing and mostly thinking about the beginner.

Texanpilot: Very time conuming and difficult to find 2mm colored accessory cord.

Thanks for ALL responses.

Ah, so the material cost isn't very large, but the time factor is, right? In a true manufacturing process, that adds to the total cost. I assume that you're not paying yourself fairly for that time investment.

I'll certainly buy a set, probably "with" pigtails given the choice (if it only adds a quarter, why not?), even if only out of curiosity. I don't have the social aspect of this hobby down (i.e., no group to meet up with), so buying a relatively inexpensive item is the best way for me to see if I like it. I might feel a twinge of guilt if I don't like them and undo them. What with the deal you're giving out on the labor side.
