One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

Hi all -

I didn't notice this mentioned anywhere, so -

The opening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey features some kites, dragon kites of course, eventually going up in flames.

Interesting find from one of the Middle Earth forums.

Red paper dragon kite... obviously an allusion to the Russian animation film "Sokrovischa pod goroy" ("Treasures under the mountains") which was started in USSR in 1991; however, because of budget reasons, only the prologue sequence was finished, and the project was canceled in 1993.

The song in the Russian animated film sings about "what can a brave little paper dragon kite do against a real one?"

first the kite is featured at 2:25:

Then at 3:07, as it gets destroyed:

Still looking for a clear screen shot of the kites from the Hobbit movie.
