One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

I'm just back from the Rogallo Kite Festival that was held on the giant dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, NC this past weekend. Oy! Hard work on those dunes! But it was a good festival, despite being chased off the dunes both days by afternoon t-storms. Fortunately, we had great support from the park rangers; nothing got wet, nobody got zapped, we put up a pretty good show and we had a darn good time doing it!

Have you looked at the calendar lately? Here's what's coming up!

20th-21st    Old Dominion Sport Kite Championship (ODSKC) (Richmond, VA)
27th-28th    Kites Over The Cape (Cape May, NJ)

5th    First Sunday Fly (Washington Monument)
4th-5th    Canaan Valley Windfest (Canaan Valley Resort, WV)
11th-12th    New Jersey Sport Kite Championship (NJSKC) (Liberty State Park, NJ)
23rd    Hatteras Kite Festival (Hatteras Landing, NC)

See the calendar for information links & POCs.

Regarding the Canaan Valley event, this is a Sky Jewels sponsored fun fly. The festival is on Saturday, July 4th and Sunday July 5th at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, WV. The hours are from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and from 11am to 3pm on Sunday. Lodging (with late checkout on Sunday) and gas money is available. Lunches on Saturday and Sunday are supplied by the resort. On Saturday evening, there is an informal dinner at one of the local restaurants nearby. Sanctioning for the event has been applied for.
Canaan Valley is a unique ecological zone, with many plants not seen elsewhere outside the Arctic Circle. Many attendees in the past have chosen to spend an extra day in the area to explore the various outdoor attractions as well as many of the local artisans.
The coordinator, Jim Hodges, would like to get a head count soon of those who may be interested so that he can ensure adequate lodging arrangements for everyone. If you are interested or need more information, contact Jim Hodges at 703-201-0060 or

Kites Over the Cape is sponsored by the town of Cape May, the Sport Kite comps are Eastern League events, and the Hatteras Festival is a Kitty Hawk Kites event.

In other news, still attempting to secure the church for an indoor event, probably the 1st or 8th of August but nothing's definite yet. I'll keep you informed.

Elsewhere, while it may seem early to be considering, I'd like to try and do two workshops this fall/winter. What I'm thinking is one in November/December timeframe and another in the latter part of January or February. Lots of possibilities here. Perhaps one can be a kite making workshop and the other a kite repair workshop. Maybe a combination of both. Maybe we'll do mini banners or some other type of banner again. Things are wide open. What I'm interested in is input as to what we can do in the way of a kitemaking workshop. I'm looking for designs or workshop ideas and presenters. Who out there has a good, fairly easy and reasonable design in mind? Who can present? I'm personally very keen on the Borelli Glider (an indoor fighter-type kite that is also just awesome in light winds outdoors) and would like to present it, but I'm not yet an expert on it and there are refinements to the existing plan that I'd like to make. Further, the existing plan is in Spanish; Google Translate and Babblefish do an okay translation but it's not super clean, so I'd like to try and refine the plan in English before diving into it. But I digress. As you can see, lots of work to be done there before I can present that particular kite. Please let me know if you can present at a workshop or if you have a design or plan in mind that we might be able to tackle.

If you haven't noticed, there are some new sections on the website. We now have some new pages: "About Us", "Press", "Newsletter", and "Subject Matter Experts". There have also been updates pretty much to every page on the site; in particular there are some new webcam and forum links.

Also note that the quarterly input for kiting will be due in mid-July, so if you wish to submit something now is the time to start pulling it together. Feel free to send me any notes, observations or reports from festivals you've attended; I'd love the material to include in the club's quarterly input.

As we approach the official start of summer (June 21st) I hope for good winds for everyone, but hey, it's summer, so have those light wind kites at the ready! Have a great 4th of July, ya'll!   Smiley
