One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

Hey Norm,
The Prism forum folks had a fade challenge a few years ago, where the participants were supposed to hold a fade for 30 seconds, I believe. Maybe it was on the Classy Kite forum, I forget. I don't think there was any prize, though...
~Rob.

Rob, thanks for the Fade Challenge idea. A few fliers have mentioned they have trouble holding the Fade. I have added a twist to this Fade. Should be fun.

Houston....................The Breeze has landed.

Requirements:

1. You will need to hold a fade for a minimum of one minute. Longer is good.
2. Anytime during the minute you will need to lower your kite
down to within two or three feet of the ground.
3. Hold the fade at the lowered position for a minimum of 10
seconds before raising it back up.
4. First 2 fliers to post a video win a pair of Norm's Custom 2-finger flight straps

This video is fairly long and boring, but I think it is very important. Learning to control the fade by managing your lines and slowly stepping forward or backwards will help you to move on to other tricks. At least watch it one time all the way through, especially if you are "in it to win it". Joe, there is NO cut & paste going on here.

This season my goals will be to improve as much as I did last season.  I will fly a fade for over 5 minutes this summer is my (#1.) Objective.

When I get back and wind is better.  I think I may spend the rest of March and April doing "Fades".

I can't wait to try this. I have been working on my fade recently, but not to this extent. I think this challenge will make me a lot better at the fade. Some steady wind will be really important for this challenge. I may need to hit the beach...

Wow, Norm, you've got a lot of input to your fades.
Rob, I am jiggling the lines ONLY to show how the kite is "locked" in the fade. I wish I would have steered the kite left and right rather than so much line jiggle.

Beach wind is cheating.

An old skool SUL in beach wind is grounds for disqualification...   Wink

Here's another opinion.
I've never noticed a difference. Every time I go to the beach the wind is just as crappy as it is here in the valley.

Will my tail weight help me hold the fade?

How do I control the altitude? I assume I can raise it by adding a little tension when the nose is high? Drop it by adding tension when the nose it low, or will that just make it dive at the ground? (Or is it just walking forward and backward? I remember a video telling me that the nose swings up and down. Do you have to time the tension to that swinging? But I don't see swinging in the video.)

And yeah, three feet off the ground sounds tricky inland. But I'll try it. I may have to ask for a Go Pro or similar device for my birthday. Or put our point-and-shoot on a Flavor Flav necklace.
