Welcome to the GWTW Forum.
Guests (non-registered users) can view the forum but are unable to post.  If you don't have anything to say then why would you bother to register?
One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

You know Mike, Linux was a thought that went thru my head, too. I can remember the early adopters going on and on about it. It always intrigued me but never enough to make the leap. I spent a lot of years working off of virtual servers running Linux, installing/editing scripts and stuff, so I'm not really afraid of it.

Big community to help you out, tons of open source programs. Might be worth the effort just to thumb my nose at MS. On the other hand, I am a diehard pointer-clicker person. I *do* love my mouse.

No effort needed really, there are Linux Distro's that you can run directly off a DVD or USB stick, just set your boot options to boot first from the CD/DVD/USB. They come with MS Office compatible programs, GIMP photo editing, Firefox etc. Pretty much a complete OS and Suite that won't affect your current Windows install at all. You just download the ISO and burn it, then boot up off it. You might find it does just what you want. Need something in Windows, just pull the DVD/Memory stick and you'll boot to Windows again.

Regardless a Linux DVD is nice security, you can use it to rescue your files off a totally trashed Windows install if your only option ends up a format and you haven't kept up on your back ups.
